Many objects in the Stanford University Archaeology Collections have gaps in their documentation. Some important questions are often left unanswered:

  • What is it?
  • Who made it?
  • Where does it come from?
  • How and when did it arrive at Stanford?

Provenance is the history of ownership of an object and the path that it took to arrive in the collection. Provenance research seeks to uncover the story of an object from its creation to the present day. In many cases, investigations into an object’s function, manufacture, and cultural context are linked to questions of provenance.

Provenance Research Interns at SUAC carefully study objects and collectors, making essential contributions to our increased understanding of the collection.

This installation highlights the work of three students who were Provenance Research Interns during the Winter 2024 term.
