Constructing a Country Dream: Finds from the Stanfords’ Palo Alto Mansion

Archaeological artifacts reveal a Gilded Age “country dream” created at the Farm, the agrarian estate in Palo Alto that is now Stanford University, through the Stanford family's aspirations and others' skill and labor. This exhibit, curated by Alanna Simao (independent study), is a rare opportunity to view objects owned and used in the Stanford houshold during the university's founding years. Featured items were excavated by the on-campus Stanford Mansion excavation. The exhibit is part of the Stanford Archaeology Center's Before Stanford initative, bringing to light stories of the deep and diverse cultural history of Stanford lands. It is presented in associaition with Stanford 125, the university's 125th anniversary highlighting the school's transformative impacts at the individual and global scale.
