Understudied: Items Lately Returned from "The Melancholy Museum"

The Melancholy Museum: Love, Death, and Mourning at Stanford is an exhibition currently on view at the Cantor Arts Center.

Created by artist Mark Dion, The Melancholy Museum is an installation of hundred of items from the Stanford Family Collections. Through objects alone, it tells stories of the lives and labor that made Stanford University and the Stanford collections possible. While foregrounding the life and death of Leland Stanford Jr., The Melancholy Museum also represents the land's original Ohlone inhabitants and Chinese laborers who constructed the campus. Visit the Cantor to see the exhibit, which includes several objects on loan from the Stanford University Archaeology Collections. 

This exhibit features SUAC objects originally selected by Mark Dion for inclusion in The Melancholy Museum. They are both understudies and understudied.

On view at the Stanford Archaeology Center. Members of the public are welcome to enjoy a self-guided visit of the exhibit Monday - Thursday between 9am and 5pm and Fridays by appointment (please email us at suarchcoll [at] stanford.edu (suarchcoll[at]stanford[dot]edu) for appointments), with the exception of University holidays.
