New exhibition highlights Stanford’s collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, multicolored ceramics

The Stanford University Archaeology Collections' newest student-curated exhibit Our Dark Materials: Rediscovering an Egyptian Collection has been reported by Stanford News and featured in the Stanford Report. This exhibit highlights ancient Egyptian stone tools, bronze figurines, miniature ceramics, and mummy cases that were collected by Jane Stanford; her son, Leland Stanford Jr.; and other university affiliates. These artifacts were nearly destroyed during the 1906 earthquake but survived, only to be hidden in museum storage for over a century. The new exhibit reexamines this lost collection and presents it in a different light. The exhibit is on view at the Stanford Archaeology Center through Spring 2019. The news piece includes reflections from student curators and the course instructor.
